Child care insights: Learn more about the physical development of infants

While every infant’s brain develops at a different pace, milestones can help you to track your child’s progress. The best way is to observe the milestones your child achieved in the last week or month. If you are worried that your child is not developing properly, it’s best to consult with your pediatrician. Here’s a helpful guide to important physical milestones in your child’s first year:

Month 1

  • Lifts head for a few seconds
  • Strong grasp reflex

Month 2

  • Lifts head while lying on stomach
  • Starts to push up while lying on stomach

Month 3

  • Can bear weight on forearms
  • Able to hold objects
  • Smiles, especially at familiar faces

Month 4

  • Good head control
  • Sits with a little support
  • Uses both hands to hold objects

Month 5

  • Teething starts
  • Is able to roll over
  • Begins to put objects/toys in mouth

Month 6

  • Can lift up on hands from stomach position
  • Sits without support
  • Bears much of own weight when supported in standing position

Month 7

  • Can move objects from one hand to another
  • Bangs objects on surfaces

Month 8

  • Stands while holding onto furniture
  • Reaches for toys

Month 9

  • Can crawl
  • Develops preference for right or left hand

Month 10

  • Better balance control while sitting
  • Able to wave

Month 11

  • Cruises – walking while holding onto furniture
  • Can roll a ball

Month 12

  • Can stand alone
  • Takes first independent step
